Softball Records 6th Straight Victory with wins over Surry

Game 1

PITT 15 SURRY 4

The Bulldogs offense came out hot and set the tone in the bottom of the 1st inning.  With a leadoff walk and an error to put Shirley and Villalovos on, Roslyn Bunch hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to score them both.  Taylor Carroll who had 5 RBI’s in the game then blasted her first homerun of the year making the score 4-3.  The Bulldogs would tally another 5 hits in the inning to put them ahead 8-3 going into the top of the 2nd inning.  In the bottom of the 4th inning Pitt put things out of reach with the top of the lineup – Shirley and Villalovos both singled and a sac fly by Bunch pushed 1 run across.  Carroll then took a ball deep for a triple and scored on a throwing error to plate 3 runs to put the Bulldogs up 15-4.

Villalovos earned the win for PCC. She allowed five hits and four runs over five innings, striking out three and walking one.

The Bulldogs had 15 hits in the game.  Most notably was Meghan Moore and Morgan Shirley going a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate.  Taylor Carroll, Meghan Pullicino, and Stephanie Villalovos each collected 2 hits in the game to help lead the offense.

Game 2

PITT 4-3

Game 2 was all about the bottom of the 7th inning.  Going into the last 3 outs of the game the Bulldogs had only collected 4 hits and were losing to Surry 0-3.

Meghan Moore found a way to lead things off with an ROE. Shirley then singled on another pitch to center field putting 2 runners on with 1 out.  Stephanie took the walk to load the bases up for Ros Bunch who made a great adjustment at the plate to squeeze a double up the middle scoring Moore and Shirley.  With the score being 2-3 and runners on 2nd and 3rd base Taylor Carroll pushed an outside pitch for a ground ball to the right side for a walk-off single scoring Villalovos and Bunch from second base to win the game.

Allie Phillips pitched the first 5.1 innings of the game allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 3 batters.  Freshman Haley Rivenbark came in to shut out the last 1.2 innings of the game giving up no hits.

“The second game really showed our team’s grit and determination.  We need to work on some specific things going into the next games but overall to win the way that they did at the end shows a lot of promise.  It was a full team effort top to bottom of the 2nd game. It was awesome to see adjustments at the plate, especially for Meghan Moore on the day; and the consistency of our leadoffs to get on base has proved to be problematic for other teams.”
