Softball Sweeps Richard Bland, Patrick Henry in Virginia

PETERSBURG, VA - PCC traveled to Petersburg, VA Saturday morning to play the Statesmen of Richard Bland College in what would turn out to be two very hard fought wins for the Bulldogs.

Game 1:

The Bulldogs struck immediately in the top of the first inning when Taylor Carroll reached base on a single to right field and would later score on an error by the Statesmen off of Erin McDonald?s hit.

They pushed another run across the plate in the top of the 2nd inning when Taylor Niemotka drove in Haley Wright with a single to center field.

It wouldn?t be until the top of the 4th inning that Pitt would solidify it?s lead. Wright, Niemotka and Carroll came in to score on a single by freshman Megan Latsko to left field, making the score 5-0.

The Bulldogs would almost complete the game in 5 innings as they were able to score 3 more runs in the top of the 5th inning on a single and an error to score Brianna Williams and Haley Wright and bring Niemotka all the way to 3rd base. She would later score on a single by Megan Latsko to make it 8-0.

The Statesmen showed some offensive life when they strung together 1 run in the bottom of the 5th inning but didn?t string enough together even in the bottom of the 7th when they pushed 2 more runs across to make the final score 8-3.

Overall the Bulldogs collected 13 hits; Haley Wright led the way with 3, while Taylor Carroll, Erin McDonald, Taylor Niemotka, Megan Latsko each collected 2 hits apiece.

English Dean got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and held RBC to just 2 earned runs, and only 1 run until the bottom of the 7th inning. She gave up 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Game 2:

Game 2 was a dogfight going back and forth, but eventually Pitt prevailed 12-11. Pitt took the lead for good in the seventh inning. The game was tied at nine in the top of the seventh when Erin McDonald singled off of Shannon Buffington, driving in one run.

Pitt Community College got a boost from Taylor Carroll who went 4-for-5 at the plate. Carroll singled in the first, singled in the fourth, doubled in the sixth, and singled in the seventh.

After Pitt Community College scored one run in the top of the fourth, Richard Bland answered with one of their own. The Bulldogs scored when Carroll singled off of Brooklynn Bilyard, driving in one run.

Peyton Taylor earned the win for Pitt Community College. She pitched seven innings, giving up 11 runs, 11 hits, and striking out two.

PCC collected 11 hits. Carroll, Brianna Williams, and Haley Wright each collected multiple hits for Pitt Community College. Wright went 2-for-4 at the plate as she led the team with three runs batted in. PCC tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Carroll led the way with four and Summer Prevatte with 2.

The Bulldogs finished up the weekend taking two games from the Patriots on their home field, sweeping the Patriots in the season 4-game series.

Game 1 the Bulldogs struggled to get any type of offense strung together to make anything significant happen and gain a comfortable lead. The game was tied going into the top 7th inning 3 to 3 when sophomore Caroline Dorman came up to the plate for a huge 2-out pinch hit single. With the winning run on first base Erin McDonald hit a deep fly ball to left field to score Dorman and eventually score herself on a throwing error and secure the lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning 5-3.

The Patriots outhit the Bulldogs 7 hits to 6; the Bulldogs were able to take advantage of defensive miscues from the Patriots and seized the opportunity to pull out the win.

Allie Phillips earned the win on the mound pitching 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 0 walks and striking out 6 batters.

Game 2:

PCC would strike in the top of the 2nd inning when English Dean helped herself at the plate with a first pitch RBI double to left field scoring Haley Wright who reached base herself on a leadoff single.

The Bulldogs would string together another 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning and 1 run in both the top of the 4th and 6th inning.

PCC outhit the Patriots 11 hits to 5. English Dean and Erin McDonald would lead the team with 2 hits apiece while Anna Craft, Peyton Taylor, Taylor Carroll, Hannah Colflesh, Taylor Niemotka, Haley Wright and Megan Latsko would each have a hit in the game.

English Dean took the mound in game 2 and threw her 3rd shutout on the season going 7 innings with 5 hits, 0 walks and striking out 4.

The Bulldogs take on Richard Bland College at home tomorrow at 4pm to finish up the 4 game series. They also host Florence-Darlington Technical College on Friday at 3pm and travel to Wake Tech on Saturday.
