Softball Finishes 3-0 on the Weekend

Pitt 4 Florence Darlington 3

PCC traveled to Florence, SC for a single-game makeup from an earlier rain-out date in the season.

The tight game was highlighted by two big double-plays on defense.  The first in the bottom of the 1st inning to keep a run from crossing the plate, and another on a line drive to Taylor Carroll at short.

The Bulldogs scored in the top of the 5th inning when Morgan Shirley singled on a line drive followed by another single by Villalovos.  Kelsey Peedin hit a ball deep to right field scoring Shirley from 2nd base to put Pitt up 1-0 with 1 out.  Carroll hit a sac fly to score Villalovos giving the Dawgs one more run in the inning.

After allowing 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th, Pitt rallied and scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th.  Peedin reached on a fielding error by the right fielder to lead off the inning.  Carroll singled and Pullicino put down a sac bunt to move Peedin to 3rd base with just 1 out.  With Julia Gonzalez at the plate, Peedin scored on a wild pitch as the Stingers were attempting to intentionally walk Gonzalez.  Roslyn Bunch followed up with an RBI single to center field to score Carroll who had advanced to 3rd.

Despite giving up a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 7th inning, Villalovos took care of the next three batters on her own; a strikeout swinging, pop up to the pitcher, and a strikeout swinging for the 3rd out to end the game.  Villalovos pitched all 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 3 runs (1 earned), striking out 4 and walking 3.

The Bulldogs racked up 12 hits in the game. Bunch, Shirley, Pullicino and Dawson all had multiple hits in the game.

Sunday

Game 1

Defensive errors and timely hits made game 1 very close between the Patriots and the Bulldogs.

After an injury pulled Kelsey Peedin from the game, the Patriots took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. In the top of the 5th Shirley singled to right field.  Villalovos laid down a sac bunt and reached on a throwing error and Shirley advanced to 3rd base.  Kelsey Peedin hit an infield ground ball scoring Shirley to tie the game 4-4.  Meghan Pullicino laid down a squeeze scoring Villalovos to put the team up by 1 run.

The 6th run of the game was on a solo homerun shot by Taylor Carroll to lead off the top of the 7th inning.  Despite the Patriots putting one run across in the bottom of the 7th, PCC hung on for the win.  Villalovos pitched all 7 innings, surrendering 5 runs on 10 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.  The Bulldogs collected 10 hits in the game.
