NORMAN CABACAR NAMED NEW VOLLEYBALL HEAD COACH
Pitt Community College is proud to introduce Norman Cabacar as the new Head Coach of Bulldog Volleyball.
Cabacar succeeds former Head Coach Katelynn Speas and will look to build upon the solid framework that has been established in the program.
Athletic Director Dawn Manning: "“We are extremely excited to have Coach Cabacar join our staff as the Head Volleyball Coach at Pitt Community College. He has established himself as one of the top high school coaches in our area and will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program. The contacts that he has in our area and across the state will give him an edge on recruiting some great talent in addition to developing our returners. This is an exciting time for our volleyball program and we look forward to the future of PCC Volleyball.”
Cabacar has deep volleyball roots dating back to his high school days growing up in Hilo, Hawaii, and has many years of experience playing both indoor and beach volleyball at high levels.
Cabacar began his coaching career in 1999 coaching club volleyball. His next stint came at Rose High School as an assistant coach from 2004-2008 where he helped guide the Rampants to an appearance in the school’s first NC 4A State Championship Match. Following his success as an assistant, Cabacar was named Rose’s Head Coach in 2008 where he immediately captured the NC State Championship in his first season. He went on to again win State Championships in 2009 and 2014, and in 2010 and 2015 his teams reached the Final Four. In addition to his success in the State Tournament, Cabacar captured 6 conference championships and his teams were nationally ranked 11 times. He holds an overall record of 230-39-2 and took home “Coach of the Year” honors in 2009, 2012, 2014, and 2015.
Below are his answers to a few questions asked during the introduction:
What were some of the motivating factors that drew you to accepting the Volleyball Head Coaching position at Pitt CC?
I was excited for the opportunity to take on a new challenge moving from high and club to the junior college level, and being a Pitt alumni this was a great fit for me personally and professionally.
Having coached at various levels of competition, what are you most looking forward to about working with athletes at the collegiate level?
I am eager to work with student athletes that have the drive and passion to take their talents beyond the high school level and I hope to only broaden our players’ passion for the game while motivating them to be successful on and off the court.
What do you think some of the challenges may be?
The biggest challenge is getting the players to understand that the competition will be just as talented as we are, and that it will take hard work and support for one another to excel as a team.
Pertaining to recruiting, what will be some of your main areas of focus geographically?
Pitt County has many talented players so I would love to keep them here so that their family and friends can come watch them and support the team. Additionally, I do know many high school and club coaches across the state especially from Greensboro back to the coast and down around the Wilmington area that I will reach out to for potential players.
What are you looking for in a potential student-athlete?
They are students first so I expect them to work just as hard in the classroom as they would in practice or a match. They must be dedicated and determined to help the team excel on and off the court. They must be coachable and a team player.
Coach Cabacar is a Pitt alumni, and also received his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Mount Olive before attaining a Master's Degree at East Carolina University.
