Coach Darrick Mullins is a native of Pitt County, NC.  He graduated from North Pitt High School (Class of 1986), and went on to graduate from Elizabeth City State University (1991) with a B.S. in Business Administration-Marketing. Later on in his life, in the midst of being a father, husband, coach and teacher, he decided to go back to school at Concordia University (2016), where he earned his Master’s in Coaching and Athletic Administration. Coach Mullins is President and founder of Hightower, Inc. & Hightower Hoopsters Amateur Athletics Union program.  He also Organized the Winners Unlimited Youth Basketball Camp for 21 years. He is happily married to his wife of 23 years Gylnis Mullins, and has two wonderful kids, Mason Mullins (Asst. Coach) and Taylor Mullins.

Coach Mullins was appointed as Head Coach of the Pitt Community College Bulldogs in 2010. Prior to his appointment of Head coach, he served as the assistant coach of the PCC Men’s Basketball team for 2 years. His most proud accomplishment is the improvement of the overall team GPA from 1.19 to 2.5 over the past six seasons, with its first ever Fall 2014 semester cumulative overall 3.0 average and a 93.7% retention rate in 2017.

As Coach Mullins enters his tenth season, he has averaged 20 plus wins each season, and 8 players have been ranked nationally in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Coach Mullins has also had 13 players on the Region X All-Conference team and two players named NJCAA All-American under his leadership.  Mullins currently has several players to continue their collegiate basketball careers at 4-year universities: Ramone Adderly (Northeast Oklahoma University), Chuckie Becton (St. Thomas University), JaQuan Blount (University of Mount Olive), Kelly Marsh (Lincoln University, CIAA), Terrell Maryland (Bryan College), John Setters (Averett University), Mike Tyson (Fayetteville State University, CIAA), and Darren Wilson (Nebraska’s York College).

In 2019 Mullins led the Bulldogs to a Region X regular season championship.  This accomplishment qualified PCC for the NJCAA DII National Tournament, the school's first in program history.

Mullins is currently the Student Activities and Coburn Center Coordinator which involves coordinating Intramural sports on campus.  Coach Mullins also worked as an adjunct for the Developmental Studies Department teaching ACA-090 (Study Skills) from 2010 to 2015.

Mullins has taken on a variety of roles at PCC, along with coaching, instructing, and coordinating, he is a former PCC student. Mullins decided to spend a year taking courses to enhance his professional development. Coach Mullins attributes a lot of credit to God, family, a strong support staff, administration and a host of mentors. Coach Mullins remains in several community projects within Pitt County and surrounding counties including Hightower’s Camp, Special Olympics, ALS Challenge, Cancer Awareness, Charles Coburn Classic, and Princeton Middle School reading program, which are just a few that are dear to his heart.  Coach Mullins’s always tell his players “your job is to be prepared when the opportunity presents itself”.

Coach Mullins’ goal as a basketball coach is to establish and model responsible behavior and teamwork through personal leadership of the basketball program. He is committed to recruiting and retaining academically qualified student athletes, increasing and maintaining above average student athlete graduation rates and building and maintaining a winning basketball tradition. His coaching style enhances his players’ athletic abilities while encouraging their academic success.  Coach’s ultimate prize is to witness the successful evolution of a player’s game while he develops the skills necessary to compete in life.
