Canes Drop a Close One

LOUISBURG -- Even though they no longer compete in the same league, emotions are always intense when long-time rivals Louisburg College and Pitt Community College play each other on the baseball diamond.

Games between the traditional powers are usually close and hotly contested -- and Tuesday's nine-inning meeting at LC's Frazier Field was no different.

Offense was at a premium for much of the outing, but the Bulldogs used a two-run homer from Austin LaFollette in the top of the sixth inning of action to rally past the Hurricanes for a 4-3 decision.

Louisburg College (21-18) struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first as Justin Oakley coaxed a two-out single and eventually  made his way to third base before scoring on a passed ball.

Pitt CC (20-8) struck for two markers in the top of the third courtesy of a run-scoring single from Caleb Morris that was followed by a costly Hurricanes' error.

For Louisburg, the highlight of the outing came in the bottom of the fourth when Cody Willis and Charles Lee delivered back-to-back solo homers to push the Hurricanes ahead 3-2.

But LC would not score again, and the Bulldogs went ahead for good thanks to LaFollette's  heroics in the sixth.

The clubs tangle again Wednesday, this time on the PCC campus in Winterville.
